Rajasthan is the unique state and politically power is alternating between congress and BJP. During 2013, Congress leader Ashok Gehlot lost the election and Vasundhara Raje won the election. However, in December 2018, the Congress won the Rajasthan Assembly elections.
Though historically Rajasthan is a state which elects different political party in every election but there were reasons for Congress to come in the power. Rajasthan was ruled by the BJP candidate- Vasundhara Raje till this election since 2013. The state has faced unemployment, farmer’s distress and the negative opinions against Raje.
Rajput were loyal voters of BJP, who were angry with BJP on Padmavat movie, and Gajendra Sarkar was not selected as BJP Chief.
These were reasons which reduced the vote bank of BJP. The Gujjars were also loyal BJP Voters, and they were not given quota in education and in other jobs due to court’s order. Therefore, Rajput and Gujjar voters were angry with BJP, and Congress was able to tap the votes.
Rajasthan remains one among the few states where the congress has a popular state level leadership. Ashok Gahlot has been Chief minister earlier, and Sachin Pilot has a legacy of being Rajesha and Rama Pilot’s son. Sachin Pilot was made as congress chief in State, and he has been working hard quietly during elections.
Ashok Gehlot as CM
The challenge post winning was to chose the CM , and finally Ashok Gehlot was chosen as Chief Minister of the state. He was preferred over younger leaders due to his experience as a Chief Minister for two terms in 1998-2003 and 2008 to 2013. He is trusted with ability to remain loyal and has higher political and administrative experience. Ashok Gehlot is known to have good rapport with MLAs. Making Gehlot as chief minister of the state would attract the traditional vote bank for Congress.
The Second popular leader- Sachin Pilot has cordial relationship with Ashok Gehlot and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Sachin Pilot becomes the deputy CM of the State.
